IN THE UNIVERSE

A NOVEL

FOREWORD

Novel Butterfly love in the universe, futuristic fictional,is a beautiful, relaxing story of a young couple, Daniel and Daniella, who met at the University of Toronto, fell in love and married after graduation. As they liked traveling they visited all Canadian magnifying places and described their beauties. Daniel especially liked Canadian North, where he suffered from the Polar bear. Accidently Daniel happened to be involved in rescuing a bank robbery, which brought him a reputation of a hero. Later, that will cost him to be kidnapped by the same group of robbers.

When they finished university, both of them had got employed by the National Research Council of Canada, on the research projects. While cooperating with the Canadian Space Agency they had been selected as an ideal couple for the first human fertilization in space, and as such sent to the International Space Station to do the experiment. Successfully their twins, Svemir and Venera, were born there, as the first Canadian babies born in space, while the whole family became world-wide known.

Babies “Aliens” grew healthy, developing progressively, as happy children, and finished universities as well. As adults Svemir and Venera were employed by the Canadian Space Agency, where Venera replaced dr Anastasia Christopher, who delivered her in the ISS. Party held for Venera’s employment went very touchy.

All names, except Daniel’s, are invented. Any similarities are accidental and unintentional.

This novel is dedicated to Daniel and all my grandchildren.

CHAPTER 1

It was a nice sunny day at the open space of the University of Toronto, on the campus area, during the last day of regular undergraduate student classes, celebration was held created by the Student Assembly to lead the planning of social and recreational activities in aims to have fun and safety for students, faculty staff and invited guests.

Student celebration was taking full movement when Daniel heard a loud call by the name Daniella...a. At first he thought that somebody had called him, and looked around. He saw a girl giving a sign raising a hand, and he approached her too.

-Are you Daniella? Asked Daniel!

-Yes, I am! She answered shortly.

-I am Daniel, Daniel said, and passed his hand, to present himself.

Daniella was surprised, thinking that he was joking. They both looked at each other, and laughed.

-I am honest, continued Daniel, -My name is Daniel, I am going to be a fourth year student of Chemical Engineering. I happen to be here with some of my friends, so when I heard your name called, I thought that somebody was calling me. I am glad to know you now, we have the same names. Interesting!

Daniella looked at Daniel, but didn’t say anything. She noticed his eye color and face features, but kept it in her mind. Daniel has also noticed that Daniella is a very nice looking girl, nicely dressed, blue-turquoise eyes and hair of chestnut color. She was almost the ideal figure of height, slightly lower than he. After mutual acquaintance they promised each other to meet again, and exchanged emails.

On the way home Daniella told her girl friends whom she has met. At his home Daniel also mentioned to his parents that he met a girl of his name-sake, which confuses them all. His mom Una afterwards asked to get him to know more who she is, and where originally her parents are from.

-Why does that interest you mom? Daniel asked.

-Seems to me that her namehas a Slavic origin, although it is international. Anyway if you see her again, ask her.

Daniel’s older brother was interested more in how she looks, than where she is from. –We are all Canadians, mom, regardless where we are from, we are all equal.

-I know that, said Una, but her name interests me. It is unusual for boys and girls to meet each other with the same name-sake.

A day or two later Daniel wrote to Daniella what his mom was interested about, and when she mentioned that to her parents they became interested in Daniel. Obviously Daniella didn’t know anything more about him, except that he is a student at the same university, faculty of Chemical Engineering, starting fourth year.

It will pass some time when they run into each other at the main entrance of her faculty of Biochemistry. Then Daniella told Daniel what she is studying, and who her parents are. They did not go into details, but agreed to meet each other next Friday evening.

That afternoon Daniella was getting ready, taking make-up and choosing a convenient dress, when her mom noticed it and asked her where she was going.

-Going to meet Daniel, mom. He seems quite a good young boy, so you should not be afraid.

- I am not afraid, only interesting, and you know that we have to know all the time where some of us are, in case someone might need help. You know that we have full confidence in you, so far. Go, and have fun. In case you need to be picked-up , call us.

Daniel came casually dressed, and they first walked the street at the well known area, not far from the university.

It was close to nine o’clock and the sun was approaching to the sunset, rosy color clouds at west were a good omen for the next day, and some swallows were flying. As the night approached traffic had slowed down and less noise around. Daniel took Daniella’s hand and they went to a small bistro. Nice pictures on the walls of the decorated restaurant room, where they sit at the table near the window. Table lamp lit Daniella’s face, so her smile was just like from the dreams. Daniel first kept his look at her face, partly covered with a hair, and then he started to speak about his program for the fourth year at the faculty. He was expressing that they will have Chemical Plant Design and Elective Technical Thesis, as well as Science Technology, Energy Systems etc. He was going to ask Daniella about her Biochemistry, but she wanted to change the subject, instead she prefers to speak about her friends and what they want to play. She said:

-I have to speak about my faculty at home with parents, as they require it from me, but when we are out we speak about nice things only. –I agree, added Daniel.

When she stretched out her hand to reach a glass of juice, Daniel put his hand on her and she looked at his eyes. They exchanged looks and smiles without words. Afterwards Daniel told her about his last trip to western Canada, with his parents, which was very nice and memorable. Daniella liked that subject much more, and she talked about their trip to the Mediterranean and Egypt. While spending a nice evening, the first together, they concluded that they both like traveling and they might plan some together in the future.

Daniella said that she was not to be late, so they left about eleven and went together to the subway. Daniel accompanied her to her home, and then returned to the subway station, taking the train to his place. It was almost midnight when he arrived, but his parents did not worry for him since he was a grown-up and careful boy, twenty two years old, already. They both lived in safe areas, but regardless one has always to be attentive.

Next day Daniella wrote Daniel an email, expressing that she enjoyed it, and that she told her parents a bit about him. In reply, Daniel recommended that they meet again and see something in Toronto together. He said:

-Tell me what would be the best for you to see, and we’ll do it.

On Saturday, a week after their first meeting, they met at the corner of Bloor & Yonge Street, and walked from there to the CN Tower. They were holding hands and walking slowly. The day was sunny, but not too hot. Gentle wind was blowing, flapping Daniella’s hair, while her voice was like birds chirping. They enjoyed it, not feeling that time was passing. They decided to go on top of the CN Tower, bought tickets and went on up. Look from the top was dreadful but impressive. They looked all around, 360 degrees, watching the city and the lake. Both mentioned that it was their first time there. While watching over the Ontario Lake Daniel embraced her, and Daniella didn’t offer the resistance. Then he kissed her for the first time. That surprised Daniella, but with great pleasure, and she turned around, embraced him and returned him a kiss. Their first kisses happen high in the sky, at the place of memory. Daniel recommended her to date, which she accepted. And that’s where it started.

Two of them wanted to know more about CN Tower, as well as the City of Toronto, too. Going through the official documents, during a couple of weeks time they learned a lot: On the shores of Lake Ontario in Canada's biggest city is the iconic CN Tower, built in 1976, one of Canada's most famous landmarks. The tower is one of the tallest structures in the world standing 553 meters high. It offers fine dining in its revolving restaurant, for 360 people at the same time, where visitors can enjoy a meal while looking out over the city and lake. There is also the LookOut and the Glass Floor, offering beautiful views out over the city and beyond. Its structure is visible from almost everywhere in the city. At night, the tower is lit in different colors.

Beside the CN Tower, is the beautiful stadium Sky Dome, named also Rogers Center, with revolving roof, at which baseball players of Blue Jays play their spectacular games for thousands spectators. Not so far from there is the famous castle Casa Loma, attractive for visitors as well. At the center of the city, at Bloor Street, is located an architecturally attractive new museum, educational point for children and adults. The City of Toronto has probably the most beautiful City Hall building, focal point for many events, as well. Toronto is a city stretched about 110 kilometers in its length and over 60 in width, with a population over six million of all world nationalities. By that, Toronto is in reality a cosmopolitan city. Toronto’s famous University is classified as seventeenth in the world, where insulin has been discovered first, plus others such as Ryerson, well known for fashion studies. Toronto has everything that man can carry in his mind and is an open city to everyone.

In 1998 Greater Toronto was formed as a 'Megacity, the largest city in Canada and the fifth largest in North America. Before Europeans showed up, the Toronto area was home to indigenous Indian tribes for 11,000 years. Toronto got its name possibly derived from a Mohawk name for a sacred fallen tree, historically used by First Nations tribes. After WWII the city breathed a huge sigh of relief. Thousands of European immigrants rolled into town, gifting the city with an influx of new tongues, customs and food. The building of the controversial City Hall, built 1965, really gave Toronto a boost into modernity. Although not the national capital, Toronto is the Ontario provincial capital and probably the best-known city in Canada, in large part due to the Toronto International Film Festival and its popularity as a theater destination. Toronto is a city with a rich heritage. Toronto attractions and highlights span from the modern to the historical and cultural to commercial.

Toronto has more than 8000 restaurants. Yonge Street in Toronto was once considered to be the longest street in the world. Toronto has the largest underground Path pedestrian system in North America. It connects 1200 stores and restaurants. It is the world’s largest underground sidewalk. Toronto is considered to be one of the most multicultural cities in the world. Nathan Phillips Square is named for the mayor of Toronto from 1955-1962. Toronto’s City Hall is located at that square. The square is used for concerts, art displays, the winter festival of lights and even demonstrations. Toronto sits on the northwest shore of Lake Ontario and has over 1600 parks, and about 10 million trees. Over 21 million people visit Toronto on an annual basis. Toronto is one of the largest cultural centers in North America.

When Daniella and Daniel met a second time, while visiting Casa Loma, they were exchanging information about the city in which both of them were born, and they were proud of it. Daniel said to Daniella:

-I am desirous to travel all over the world, but first I have to see Canada, our country, as many possible places. I am thinking of starting to travel through Canada as soon as I finish university, while you will be still studying. When you finish yours you can join me if you wish.

Daniella looked at him and added:

-I’d be glad to join you if you accept me, and she smiled.

On her comment Daniel hugged her firmly. –You are my lovely girl, he said, adding: -I love you I love you so much, since you are as you are. Hearing those words, Daniella hugged and kissed him.

Returning from Casa Loma Daniel accompanied Daniella again to her home. It was afternoon, a fairly hot day when they arrived. Daniella’s parents happen to be seated in the backyard under the cherry tree. They turned around when she opened the entrance door, and when Daniella’s mother saw Daniel she called them both to come. Being found Daniel did not have any other chance than to go. Approaching them, with a gentle bow and full respect, Daniel stretched his hand, first to the mom and then father, telling his name. Daniella’s mom Erika hugged Daniel, and father Dennis shook hands with him. They offered Daniel to seat and Erika asked:

- Daniel, what would you like to drink? We are glad to see you. Daniella already told us something about you. We learned that soon you will finish university. Have you already made plans for employment, or what else?

Daniel did not have definite plans for his future, so instead, he only said that he would like to travel a bit first and have a rest. Daniella was sitting beside, thinking about Daniel’s fillings at the moment. He felt like being at the examination.

Next day Daniel was at his tennis training, at Howard Park Tennis Club, when he got a message from Daniella through his telephone, telling him that she was sorry for him being possibly under unexpected pressure with her parents. When he finished training he texted her:

-Don’t you worry, everything was OK to me. I was expecting that I have to meet your parents one day, anyway. If you mention that, give them regards, and I’ll call you later. I love you! Ćao!

CHAPTER 2

It was Thursday, middle of June, about five in the afternoon, Daniel sitting in the backyard taking a sunbath when his telephone rang. Daniella was calling, asking him if he wanted to join them on a visit to Niagara Falls. Then Daniel asked her:

-When will that be?

-On Saturday!

-Who else will go with us?

-Only my parents and you and me!

-OK, confirmed Daniel. Then Daniella said that they will come to pick him up from his home. On that Daniel added:

-Don’t you come! I have to be training in your area, so I’ll be in front of the main entrance of Howard Park Tennis Club at 10.15. It is at Parkside Drive, your father will find it easily. And, it is on our way to the Q&W.

On the fixed time Dennis arrived with family, Daniella and her mom Erika were sitting at the back seat, and they left Daniel in the front seat. When they entered Q&W Highway, towards Niagara Falls, Erika asked Daniel about his tennis training, how it was, when he started to train, and how he likes it?

-Well, said Daniel, I started it when I was about five years old. My grand-parents were tennis fans and they were forcing me the most.

-How’s it that your grand-parents were forcing you, not your parents?

-My grand-parents are originally from Yugoslavia, and the best tennis player was Novak Đoković. They loved him very much, and they even called me Đoković. So, that’s how it started. I can say that I did not pay it great attention, as one should, but at least I do something for exercise and there I have good friends too.

When Erika heard that Daniel’s grand-parents were from Yugoslavia, she asked him about their origin. Daniel didn’t know much, but still he remembered that his grand-pa did PhD first in Canada, and then they immigrated to Canada, where his mother was born. His grand-pa has published some books in both languages, and his grand-ma liked painting. For his father, Daniel has mentioned only that he was originally from England.

-So, You Daniel have mixed blood, English and Serbian, said Erika. Dennis was only listening and driving. Traffic was fairly heavyand he had to be patient.

-I know that my blood is group “A” and I feel Canadian. He also added that he remembers from his grad-pa’s writing that blood groups originated from Europe, first from the area of the Ural Mountains. Erika and Dennis did not know about that. Then Erika continued speaking about their origins.

-I am originally Polish. My grad-father immigrated to Canada, and my parents were born here. My father was half German, half Polish. That’s how I got my name Erika, which is more German than Polish. Dennis origin is Scandinavian, from Sweden. So, our daughter’s blood is mixed-up (Polish, Germans, Swede’s. She is, better to say, Canadian too. Now we are all Canadians, we live fairly well and we are satisfied here, as you can see, we have everything we need.

Daniella was in silence all the time, as well as her father. Main speaker was Erika. She wanted to learn as much about Daniel. She liked him very much, his look and most of all his manners.

Approaching Niagara Falls, the surrounding scenery was very nice. Lake Ontario was on their left. Its blue water with mild waves and a few yachts on it looks impressive. Vineyards are all around on both sides of the highway.

On the Canadian side of Niagara Falls, on their right side was a bust of Nikola Tesla. When Daniel asked them if they knew who Nikola Tesla was, they answered they have heard about him many times but never went through his biography. After hearing that, Daniel has told them about many of Tesla’s discoveries, expressing the important thing that Tesla was a famous Serbian discoverer. Daniel’s story impressed Dennis very much. Erika and Daniella have listened to Daniel's story with satisfaction. Tesla’s monument had been erected on Niagara.

Day was beautiful when they went to visit the famous Niagara Falls. First they visited Niagara Falls, where they sailed on the boat "Maid of the Mist", which first went to the American side and then under the waterfall "Horse Shoe". All passengers were wrapped in raincoats because of drops that fell from the falls like rain. After that Daniella and Daniel drove a "Sky Wheel", 56 meters high where Daniella was terribly frightened, and Daniel had encouraged her with words:

- Darling, do not be scared, I am here.

On the second day they have visited the “Marinlend'” with countless attractions mainly for children. There are: Walking adventure, Tivoli wheel, Killer whales, Roller coaster, Sky screamer, and bears, deers and more. Daniel and Daniella had enjoyed ride at Roller coaster first, but when return both of them were pale in faces, telling:

-Oh my God, this is terribly frightening. I was so scared. I’ll never do it again. Serbs have a saying: “I did it three times at once, first, last and never more”, said Daniel. Afterwards, while visiting other attractions Daniella expressed a wish to try Sky screamer too. Her parents permitted her, although Daniel did not want to. She sat with some other girls in the same cabin and it lifted them up. While falling down they all were screaming. When she got out she said like Daniel:

-This is it, never more!

Her parents were scared, but didn’t want to forbid her to try it.

Family Jansson with their guest Daniel Edwardson spent two nice days at the area around Niagara Falls and youngsters had fun.

On the way back Daniella and Daniel sat at the back seat, before her mom entered the car. Dennis drove at a steady pace, while Erika occasionally looked at mirrors fixing her youngsters. They noticed that and smiled, hiding their faces, while holding hands of each other. Dennis wanted to visit one winery, so he turned to the side road and they entered the parking lot of the winery he had planned. Inside the winery they all have tested a few different wines, and bought a case of 12 bottles. In the Niagara Falls area there are about thirty wineries which produce wines of the world quality. While driving towards Toronto a couple of young fellows were whispering, as her parents would not hear their secrets.

Arriving in Toronto, Dennis first drove Daniel to his home at Pacific Avenue. Daniel’s father Michael Edwards walked out, in front of the house and invited family Janssen inside, on what Dennis answered:

-Thank you very much indeed, we have no much time this time, but we will make arrangements and visit you soon. We had a good time, Daniel is a nice, well educated young man, they enjoyed it, and we’ll see you soon. Thank you once again, and they left.

Daniel has explained where they have been and what they did, expressing a particular Roller coaster on which he and Daniella had ridden, and how horrible it was. Adding –I’ll never do it again.
