MY WORLD - 13

SIMO JELACA, Ph.D.

CANMORE, ALBERTA, CANADA

Kenmore is a city with about 12,500 inhabitants, about a hundred kilometers west of Calgary. It is located on the Bow River between the rocky Rocky Mountains, 20 km before Banff. The newest homes in Spring Creek and Restwell Trailer Park are architecturally outstanding, phenomenal, built exclusively from wood, and very comfortable to live in. The "Three Sisters" mountain peaks rise high above the settlement, on whose peaks the snow is white.
Wild animals, mostly Musse, walk freely through the park and settlement every day. They don't seem wild at all. Kenmoor is a pearl of nature and human imagination, in truth it is Heaven on earth.
The author spent two wonderful days in Kenmoor, February 27 and 28, 2017, with friends Milan and Dragica Stelkić from Novi Sad.

SINDELFINGEN, GERMANY

Sindelfingen is a town near Stuttgart, 15 km, district of Böblingen, where the Mercedes car assembly plant is located. The city has about 60,000 inhabitants, mostly employed by Mercedes. Sindelfingen was first mentioned in written documents in 1155, and was founded in 1263
.
In the center of the city is the old City Hall, now the City Museum. There is also St. Martin's church from the 11th-12th century and the Old Cemetery, directly behind the city library. The town has a large swimming pool and a fountain in the market. There is a miniature railway in Zimmerhofen Park. In Sindelfingen there are annual street festivals with traditional ethnic cuisines. The Daimler AG factory arranges regular visits for visitors and customers.
The author stayed in Sindelfingen in 1967, on which occasion he visited a colleague from the technical school, Jovan Vukov (known as "Chita"). Jovan worked at Mercede and secretly introduced the author to the factory, took him through all the plants, even the department where armored cars for statesmen were assembled.
It's wonderful to walk through the streets of a clean city where mostly old houses have enchanting architecture.

BARRI, ITALY

Bari is the largest city in the Bari province of the same name on the Adriatic Sea, Southern Italy. The economic importance of Southern Italy is second, right after Naples. Lučki is also a university city, with a significant development of tourism.
In the city is the Basilica of St. Nicholas, Cathedral of San Sabino (1035-1171). The airport in Bari is named after Pope John II, who is Polish, "Karol Wojtyla". There is also a Russian church in Bari. Bar cuisine is mainly based on wheat, olive oil and wine, with the addition of meat, garlic and all kinds of vegetables.
The author visited Bari only during one night in 1964 during his trip by ship from Greece to Yugoslavia. We did not have Italian visas, but no one asked us for any documents. They walked through the streets in the evening to feel the charm of the seaside town with the smell of grilled fish.

EMERALD LAKE, CANADA

Emerald Lake is located in Yoho National Park in British Columbia. It is the largest of the 61 lakes in the given park and one of the most visited tourist spots. The lake has a predominantly turquoise-blue-green color, with different shades from one end to the other, resulting from the deposition of fossils over millions of years. And the sun's rays refracting on the surface of the lake show the shadows of the surrounding mountain peaks, evoking the unforgettable beauty of the wonderful country of Canada. Emerald Lake was officially discovered only in 1882, during the beginning of the "Gold Rush". The vegetation around the lake is very different due to the different climate in its surroundings.
The author visited the Emerald liver with his wife as part of a round trip around Alaska. We are enchanted by the lake's beauty, which I wrote a lot about later.

1000 ISLANDS, CANADA

The region called 1000 Islands on the St. Lawrence between Canada and the United States of America has 1864 islands to be exact. They extend over a length of 80 km. The Canadian islands belong to the province of Ontario, and the US state of New York. Island sizes range from the largest of 100 km² to the smallest of one square foot (0.093 m²) above water level year-round and to have at least two trees on it. On many islands there is only one house, and on some very large castles have been built. Many can only be reached by boat, and there are also those that are connected to each other by bridges.
By the river St. Lorenz is passed by numerous world ships that sail to the central part of the American continent. And there are numerous tourist ships serving thousands of tourists from all over the world. The author and his wife
spent one day on a tourist boat enjoying the natural beauty that is unique and unforgettable. We also saw the house that a rich man built for his mother-in-law, only ten meters away from his castle, who did not know how to swim and could visit her daughter and grandchildren only when the rich man wanted it.

PICTON, CANADA

Picton is a small town in Prince Edward County, Ontario Province, by Lake Ontario, about 160 km from Toronto. It was named after General Sir Thomas Picton, who served in the British Army during the war in Spain and Portugal. The town has about 4,500 inhabitants, many of whom are retirees who buy houses here to spend their last years in a beautiful environment. There are also plenty of artists who have opened their studios there, and there are plenty of restaurants where you can find a wide variety of specialties.
The city has the Crystal Palace from 1890, next to which is an attractive youth park where skateboard competitions are held. A special attraction is the hill on top of which there is a natural lake, and restaurants are lined up around the lake. From the hill there is a magnificent view of the entire area with Lake Ontario, and visitors can take a ferry ride on the lake.
The most beautiful of all is the custom of the local agricultural population, who sell their products on a self-service basis to passing customers. They display all their products in garages or stables with measured quantities and properly displayed prices, like in supermarkets, in refrigerators, and next to the products is a box into which the customers themselves insert the appropriate money. At these producers, you can find milk, cheeses, fresh and dried meat, eggs and all other foodstuffs, and even the most diverse local wines. Thus, while they are working in their fields, passers-by are freely supplied according to their needs. The system is based on mutual full trust.
The author stayed with his wife for five weeks in the nearby place of Milford for the therapy of his grandson Alexander. During that time, every weekend, our daughter, Alexander's mother Anastasia, came to visit us, so we spent time together in Picton and enjoyed the restaurants on the mentioned hill and the ferry ride. On that hill, we also celebrated one of Anastasia's birthdays, May 11, Mother's Day.

YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO, USA

Youngstown is located in Mahoning County, Ohio, on the Mahoning River. It has about 65,000 inhabitants in an area of about 105 km². It is 100 km from Cleveland. It is considered the best place to raise children and buy houses, as well as one of the best places to start a business. There is an Innovation Institute in Youngstown. The city has parks with an area of 2000 hectares and has museums of art and weapons.
The author and his wife spent two days in Youngstown visiting their friend Rajko Stević.

WICHITA, KANSAS, USA

Wichita is located on the Arkansas River. It is an industrial city where the first aircraft production in America began, and today the city is home to the plants of Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Cessna and Raytheon. As wheat is grown in the vicinity of Wichita, the city is home to the industrial plant of the IMC company, which produces equipment for processing grain, primarily corn into industrial alcohol. It is a city of rapid industrial development.

In 1872, the first railroad was established in Wichita, which was used to transport cattle to Texas, and in one year they transported about 66,000 head of cattle.
The city of Wichita has about 388,000 inhabitants, of which 180,000 are of working age and employed, and of those 28% are college graduates.

When the American government banned the sale of alcohol, they ignored that law and made a lot of profit from alcohol.
There are several museums and galleries and a symphony orchestra in the city.
There is a story about Wichita that before it became famous for the celebrated "OK. Corral'' Marshall Wyatt Earp was a police officer. On July 21, 1870, several citizens signed a petition giving the place the status of a city. The only woman who signed the petition was a certain Catherine McCarty, whose son, when he grew up, became the mythical name Billy the Kid.
The author made an official visit to the IMC (IMC Company) factory, and on the second day of the visit, the company's president, Mr. David Vander Griend, drove us in his Cessna plane to the city of Hastings, Nebraska, where they toured the plant for processing corn into industrial alcohol. As the factory in question forbade visits by foreigners, David planted the business card of one of his engineers for me.

DENVER, COLORADO

Denver is the capital of the state of Colorado with about 680,000 inhabitants. It is about one mile above sea level. Its rapid development began at the beginning of the "Gold Rush", when its population doubled in a few years. Today it is the city of American sports: Hockey "Colorado Avalanche" and basketball "Denver Nuggets".

The city of Denver did not qualify for the 1976 Olympics due to air pollution. By the way, the city has about 8,000 hectares of green parks. The Denver International Airport is built in a very modern style, so that the traveler feels as if he is on another planet.
The author flew from Wichita to that unusual international airport in Denver, where he spent only one night and flew to Calgary in Albury, Canada, the very next afternoon. On that flight, he flew over the planning areas of Pikes Peak (Pikes Peak), where Nikola Tesla worked during his stay in Colorado Springs, and had the opportunity to see for himself the numerous lightning strikes that are almost constantly striking.

MANHATTAN, KANSAS

Manhattan is a city in the state of Kansas located on the Kansas River and the Big Blue River. The city's population is around 55,000. The city was founded by immigrants from New England in 1850. Manhattan is better known for Kansas State University. It was founded in 1863 and has about 25,000 students. The more famous fields of research at that university are: Bioenergy, Veterinary Medicine, Biology and Food. Considering that the state of Kansas is the granary of America, especially known for the production of quality wheat, research in the field of wheat chemistry and technology is at the highest level. And all other research is classified into the highest level categories (R1) according to the Carnegie classification of institutions of higher education
.
Before European settlement, until 1850, Manhattan was the seat of the Kaw tribe of American Indians, known as the Kansas People. In 1952, Manhattan received the status of All-American City, and in 2007, the status of the best city for young people to live.
Climatic Manhattan is located in the area between the humid and subtropical zone where temperatures reach +32°C and -18°C, and record highs of +47°C (August 13, 1936) and -37°C (February 12, 1899 ). The Manhattan area is occasionally hit by tornadoes, the most recent being on June 11, 2008, which caused $20 million in damage to the university.
The author visited Kansas State University in 1969 and was a guest of Professor John Shellenberger, whom the author hosted in Novi Sad during his stay at the Yugoslav Institute of Food Industry. On that occasion, he met Professor Word and their associates, on which occasion they exchanged the results of scientific research.

CADILLAC, MICHIGAN

The town of Cadillac is the administrative center of the county of Wexford. It has about 10,500 inhabitants and is an important industrial city. It is surrounded by wooded hills with plenty of game and is a hunter's paradise. The city lies on Lake Cadillac and directly touches the larger Lake Mitchell. Both lakes have an area of about 1500 hectares and are very rich in fish. The city covers an area of about 24 km², of which 4.8 km² is water
.
The foundry of the Hayes Lemmerz Company, which works for the Cadillac automobile industry, is located in the city. Hayes Lamerca products are of the best quality, because only such products can fit into a Cadillac.
The author designed a line of swinging platforms for casting cooling (Swinging platforms) and supervised the assembly of the device. For a month, he stayed at the Hampton Hotel in the Hilton hotel chain. The project, with an investment value of about 7 million dollars, was completed two days before the agreed deadline and without a single error.

THE END
